RCA Wireless Speakers

RCA wireless speakers remain devoted to the traditional design of loudspeakers, with two speaker-cabinets, that put-out a rich and true-stereo sound. Learn about RCA WS150 and RCA WSP250.

RCA is by tradition the daughter-company of Thomson. Even so, we think RCA finds it hard to compete with the step sisters Acoustic Research, Advent and Jensen, who inherited their wireless technology for loudspeakers and headphones from the defunct company Recoton. RCA currently markets three wireless speaker systems, RCA WS150, RCA WSP250 and RC970 (rear speakers).

RCA WSP150 Wireless Speakers

The RCA WSP150 speakers have only one tweeter, and their frequency response is 50 to 12,000 hertz. But the RCA wireless speakers system benefits from the advantage of coming with two traditional speaker cabinets (unlike other stereo systems that come with only one speaker).

At the same power range (2 watts per speaker), the RCA WSP150 speakers sound richer and more powerfully than Sony's SRS-RF90RK.

In order to work, both speakers have tuning knobs that help you manually set them on the base station's frequency. But this could turn out to be an annoying job, since the knob position that tunes one speaker usually messes-up the other.

The speakers must be placed in the proximity of an AC outlet, but they also work on battery power (use four D batteries per speaker). In this case, the speakers can be used outdoors, but only in nice weather.

The price range for the set (pair-speakers and transmitter, no batteries included) on Amazon is $90, which is very good compared to Sony's SRS-RF90RK wireless speaker, a quite similar performer.

RCA WSP250 Wireless Speakers

This is a newer model from RCA, and a better-performing one, too. There's no more need for tuning, the sound is better, the speakers develop more power (8 watts per channel), so this time, if taken outside, neighbors might complain. They cost more indeed, up to $150 - the highest price for this performing range, but they really combine quality sound with convenience.

An even more powerful model from RCA seems to be RC970, that develops 10 watts of power per channel and can be purchased for $170 to $200, down from $250. The manufacturer recommends them as ideal rear surround sound wireless channels in any home theatre system.
