Wireless technology is still young, and there are still a lot of gaps to fill when it comes to combining high-quality audio, design and convenience.
Wireless outdoor speakers are the closest to achieve this: they don't require a wired connection to the amplifier (or stereo), they have a range of transmission that is above average, they are weatherproof and some of them can work on batteries.
As we previously said, the technology is quite new, and the buying palette may be a bit coercive. So, here are your main options for wireless outdoor speakers:
AW811 from Acoustic Research
The AW811 speaker is based on a patented 900 MHz wireless technology. The speaker is water-resistant and thus adequate for outdoor use, but also indoor humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
When powered, the music spreads out omnidirectional, featuring high-quality sound. Optionally, you can use it as a mono speaker or get another AW811 that is sold separately and turn it into a stereo system.
The AW811 works well with TVs, DVD players, A/V receivers, mini systems, VCRs, PVR, mp3 players, portable CD and DVD players and computers. The system works with AC power but it accepts batteries (rechargeable also) as well.
ADV-W 801 from Advent
The speaker picks up the radio signals from a wireless transmitter, which can be plugged into a PC, TV, or stereo; after tuning frequencies on both devices - speaker and transmitter - the unit delivers fair FM radio sound. Using two ADV-W 801 speakers you can set them up as discrete right and left stereo channels.
Other features:
- Works on the 900-MHz radio frequency;
- Works within a range of 150 feet;
- Weighs a little under 6 pounds;
- Supports light moisture, however, not safe to leave outside in heavy rain;
- AC adapter included;
- Works on sets of eight D batteries;
- Price range: $90 to $120.
AW 810 from Advent
Works pretty much the same as ADV-W 801 but improves on the appearance. Users say it delivers strong bass and undistorted sound. When used with one speaker it works as a mono speaker. By using two speakers you can set up a stereo system.
Other features:
- Weatherproof;
- Omnidirectional sound;
- Transmitting range up to 150 ft. (manufacturer's specifications);
- Variable Frequency adjustment;
- Adjustable audio input levels;
- Price range: $99.
Jensen's JW 210
The JW 210 is perfect for outdoor or indoor use. The connection to the amplifier is wireless, and it can be powered by 8 C cell batteries (not included) or by plugging into a standard electrical outlet by using an AC adapter (included).
